About James

James Russell Lofgren was a poet, artist, musician, performer, and relentless question-asker.

He was a son whose presence felt like sunlight.
A brother full of warmth and wit.
A loving uncle in his own quiet way.
A cousin drawn to laughter.
A grandson with an old soul.
A kind and gentle nephew.
A friend who loved without hesitation.

He could light a room — not politely, but powerfully.

His art pulsed with geometry, hidden faces, cosmic symbols, color, tension, and depth. His poetry was spare, direct, and disarmingly honest. He wrote about breath as if he knew it was borrowed. He wrote about death without fear. He wrote about joy as a choice.

He lived creatively, intensely, and authentically. He felt deeply. He wrestled openly. He searched constantly.

And he reminded us:

Be happy. Just be happy.

For the last years of his life, James wrote quietly and constantly. Not for fame. Not for recognition. But because poetry was the one place shame could not interrupt truth.

His book, Make Sure the Good Times Were Good Enough to Make the Bad Times Worth Living Through, is both confession and liberation. It holds tension — light and shadow, hope and despair, humor and ache — without collapsing into any one story.

He was not only his struggle.
He was not only his pain.

Behind the Stars continues his legacy by sharing his poetry and artwork, creating spaces for reflection, and offering reminders of impermanence, mercy, and the deeper self beneath ego.

This work is in the process of becoming a nonprofit so that his creative legacy can serve others — especially those quietly fighting battles no one sees.
